Project Runway Rundown: 16 Down 1 Winner

October 29, 2010

I just have no words.

Season of the Witch Grosgrain Halloween Costume

I didn't really have my heart set on any particular costume for Molly this year. She is just starting to get into the phase where I can dress her up in something that isn't as cutesy. Nothing against cutesy. See here. I just favor the bigger dress costumes.
So when Molly said she wanted to be a witch I thought, "I can make that work." I think she got the idea from a Sesame Street book about cookie monster, a witch and a magical cookie tree. The witch in the story is the traditional green, ugly, hag-like depiction. But I didn't feel compelled to stick by that standard.
Of course, I did stick with the traditional black BUT I made a long dress and smocked the skirt (which took forever BTW). I then bustled it so she could walk. Finally, I added a bunchy pettiskirt underneath to puffen the costume out at the bottom.
I lined the sleeves with a dark red embroidered flower taffeta. The upper part of the sleeves is cinched with gold trim lined black cuffs. I also filled the neckline with a black lace embellishment.
For an added flair I added an orange crushed taffeta and black velvet lined madame's cape with brown ribbon ties. I also bought the witch cone hat at the thrift store for just $1.
I really loved the way it looked put all together. I found the straw broom in my basement. Yay for hoarding!
I'm actually keeping this one. I always imagined having a trunk of dress up clothes for my girls. And that they would occasionally wear them and put on plays. Unfortunately, I give all my cool costumes away. Lily never really seemed to have an interest in dressing up until recently. Molly seems to love it....for a while. So perhaps if they start to show more interest I might save some of my creations for them and make that trunk I've always dreamed of.

Happy Post Trick or Treat!

Aunt Chantalene brought Fun Dip.
Hope your Halloween was as sweet!

Stay tuned for another costume this afternoon!

Thrift Store Thursday: Sock Monkey Baby Costume

October 28, 2010

Oh....my....goodness. Eloise is soooo cute. How did I get such a cute baby? I just want to bury my face into her cheeks. And I love the way she smells. And her hair is so soft. Okay. Okay. Enough about Eloise.

With Eloise being so little around Halloween I realized that this year was possibly the only time in my life when I would be able to sew a cute sock monkey costume. I originally bought what I thought was sock monkey material, at least it looked like sock monkey material, online. But when I came in the mail it was cotton weave fabric with a sock monkey design. That's stupid. So I really didn't know what I was going to do.
Eloise is so little that I thought maybe I could sew a couple Fox River Mills socks together. But I'd have to buy it online AND time was running out. So yesterday I went to the thrift store and searched for a sweater that looked like the Fox River Mills material. It actually wasn't that hard. See below. Maybe I lucked out but I only had to stop at one place, The Salvation Army. All I looked for was mixed brown and off white woven knit sweater. I also found a cream colored sweater for the feet and hands.
I then used an infant pajama pattern, tweaked it a bit and came up with this. Sock monkey Eloise! She actually doesn't like it that much though. She likes to suck on her fingers and the costume keeps her from doing that. We're taking the girls out tonight to go Trick or Treating. I hope she holds up.
Stay tuned tomorrow for ANOTHER Halloween costume!

Here were some of the bravo costumes sewn by you loyal readers. I have to give a special hands down for doubleodanish's queen of hearts costume. You really must see the close up below for all the good details, including the whimsical hair piece. The trim and the pintucks, all so wonderful:)
Frills and All made this adorable pirate costume for her daughter Julia. The gold coins are a cute touch! And Ayorata made this unique "Last Airbender" costume for each of her children. Now that's impressive!
Thank you for sharing your creativeness with us!

Tomorrow look for a new costume on Grosgrain:)

The 'Ever After' Frock Halloween Grosgrain Giveaway

October 26, 2010

Oh I finally got this up! Whoo Hoo!

I would like to do some kind of period piece every Halloween to giveaway on Grosgrain. I wanted to do a tutor inspired frock from 'The Other Boleyn Girl' but I just didn't have time to make my own pattern.

For this dress I used a Simplicity Pattern. But I think it still looks pretty good. I love it. I wish I had a reason to wear this somewhere. Perhaps one of you have a really good reason to dress up this Halloween.

WINNER FOR THIS GIVEAWAY WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY NIGHT!!!! LINK BEFORE THEN!  PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN FOR THOSE WHO LINK AND *NEW* FOLLOWERS.
This dress is from the time period of Italian Renaissance which is from about 1400s-1500s. If I had my way I would have gone down to the capital and take some photos. If you google "Italian Renaissance" a TON of pics come up that look exactly like Pennsylvania's capital with statues and all. They must have modeled it after that time period. BUT, I just could not bring myself to parade around in public in this costume. I mean during Halloween, maybe, but downtown, in the middle of a work day. No. No way.
So I went for more of a country farm setting. Remember in the movie Drew Barrymore lived on a quaint cottage next to a farm. So that works too.

As far as fitting goes, it has an empire waist rather than a fitted bodice AND the back as you can see has ties which can be tightened or loosened. So it has a generous range. However, the arms are a bit tight. So just remember that. I have tiny wrists and it was a snug fit.

Big Halloween Giveaway Sneak Peek

October 25, 2010

Every year Grosgrain tries to have at least one big Halloween giveaway and even with everything on my plate, this year will be no different.

I had really hoped to be done with this today. In fact, when I woke up this morning I fully intended on posting this giveaway today, which I guess was a little lofty. I came across a few stumbling blocks. When you're working with a costume of this size even simple things get hairy.

But I wanted to give you a taste of what will be coming tomorrow. Now I want the winner of this giveaway to get this piece by Halloween so the contest will only run from Tuesday to Thursday night and will be express shipped to the winner to receive by Sunday. Fingers crossed.

So I'll be busy working on this and other things for the girl's costumes today. In fact I'll be busy for the rest of the week. Ugh. I just sliced by thumb with the rotary cutter yesterday and expect other injuries by Sunday.

But I'm so psyched to finish this and show it to you. Although, with Brian working in Philly I'll have to take the photos myself with a tripod:( I always look forward to the photos as much as the clothing itself so I'm kinda bummed about that but it will have to do.

Stay tuned tomorrow for the BIG HALLOWEEN GROSGRAIN GIVEAWAY!!!!

Flickr Favs: Dress Season

October 24, 2010

It may be getting a bit nippier in the air but that doesn't stop you from sewing those flirty frocks! I just HAD to include Kissed by Kate's inspired by the Nate Show Frock. I really do love it. So cute.

And Lindsay A.P.'s plum colored ruffle neck frock looks perfectly autumn paired with her knee high riding boots. She bought the fabric for only $2.50 a yard and made the dress without a pattern. Go Lindsay!

I will be posting a Halloween themed flickr fav later this week. Linky Party will be closed at 3pm.

Project Runway Rundown: 14 down 3 to go

October 22, 2010

Little did I know but Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week hosted the last TEN contestants of Project Runway. BECAUSE, they didn't want to give away who the final three contestants were. They had done this the previous year as well. If you'd like to see what Christopher, Valerie, Michael D, Casanova, Michael C, Gretchen, Mondo, April, Andy and yes...Ivy showed, visit this site.

Free Canvases TO EVERYONE!

This is actually pretty cool.

The Canvas People are offering Grosgrain readers one FREE 8x10 canvas. You do have to pay shipping and handling which is $14.95 but if you've ever researched getting your photos put on canvas you KNOW this is still an amazing price for an 8x10 canvas print.

Just follow this link to create your free canvas. This is just the perfect timing for the holidays. Make your in-laws a beautiful family Christmas gift without having to spend more than $15. (shhhh.....they'll think you paid A LOT more;) Not only is it a really good deal but it's sentimental and is a whole lot better than a chintzy $15 gift card to Old Navy.

For only $9.99 I'm upgrading mine to an 11x14 and will show it to you once it arrives! I'm so psyched! We have this wall in our dining room that's crying for something to hang from it. I've just been waiting for the right piece.

If you really want to impress the folks get a gorgeous black frame to make it pop!

AND if you want to make several for ALL the relatives, each additional canvas is 50% off. AND IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THE SAME PRINT. See top pic from How Does She?

If you want to go for the whole shibang and buy a REALLY large print. You can get $55 off any size canvas! But I'm not sure how long all of this lasts so check it out.

You can get so many Christmas gifts out of so little pocket change.

If you have a business. Have the logo put on canvas. Looks really great in the front office.

Stay tuned for a Project Runway Rundown post later today!!

Thrift Store Thursday: Dorothy Frock & Ruby Slippers

October 21, 2010

My friend Abi found this adorable blue and white gingham frock at a consignment sale and thought it would make for a good "Dorothy" costume for little Eloise. (See before below).

All I did was make the sleeves shorter and removed a pink flower trim down the front.

For the "ruby slippers" I took some black size 3 Mary Jane's I found for $1.50 at the Community Aid store (see below for before) yesterday and bought some red glitter. Now, I didn't buy the traditional dust glitter. I made sure to go to Michael's and bought the large hexagon shaped red glitter that really POPS!I spray painted them with red spray paint and immediately after sprinkled the red glitter all over the shoes. I then sprayed a final clear coat to seal everything in and let it dry overnight.

I loved the way they looked so much that I made a pair for myself. So sparkly! And if you're wondering....yes....they shed. I think this could be remedied by dusting them off rigorously after they dry and respraying them with red glitter spray paint which you can also buy at Michaels (rather than the red paint so you don't make the glitter opaque). Then immediately re-dusting red glitter over the spots that are starting to show. Do it over and over until you don't have any patches showing after you rigorously dust them.

November is Embellish Your Knits Month on Grosgrain!!

October 20, 2010

Photo credits left to right: Complete Embellishing, Lorajean's Magazine.

This November Grosgrain will be having EMBELLISH MONTH! Basically I'll be taking an old sweater EVERDAY and embellishing it in a fantastic way! If I can I will also try to include tutorials for most cardigans!

And no, they won't be all ruffles. (Although I do love my ruffles:)

DON'T spend $98 on an Anthropologie cardigan when all you need is an hour of your time and a thrift store sweater.

Please share this button on your sidebar. I'd love to get as many people involved as possible:)

More updates soon.

Technique Tuesday: 5 Minute Simple Pillow Tutorial

October 19, 2010

I know most of you probably know how to cover a pillow but I did have a few tips that might help your pillow look better and made faster.

My friend Abi is trying to save money everywhere she can for her upcoming wedding in June. She is making the ringbearer pillows....errrr I am making them. But she came over yesterday and I took about five minutes to recover two she had bought at the Salvation Army for $2. She had also bought the brown satiny material for 25 cents. We'll be doing something else to the pillows later to make them look really 'wedding worthy'. I'll have a tutorial for you then.

So I thought I'd get a good post out of it and documented the very simple process. In case you are a newbie to sewing, this is about a simple a project as you can get. But I also give some handy tips for recovering a pillow in case you have trouble with certain things.
1. Take an old pillow.

Prudent Baby Book Review and Giveaway

October 18, 2010

Another fabulous crafter is Jaime Curtis of Prudent Baby. Perhaps you've heard of her? She is also the Los Angeles editor for Daily Candy Kids. A former marketing executive, she spent her single years exercising her passport with a backpack, a notebook, and a ticket to the local art museum before settling down and starting her family with her skateboarder husband, their daughter and their beloved dog, Puck.

Recently she has also written a book Prudent Advice for My Baby Daughter and it is one of those reads that you pick up and can't stop sifting through.

It's full of those wonderful funny things in life that you don't think about but seeing them in written form makes you laugh out loud or feel wistful.
I would like to live close to Jamie me and be her friend. Although I probably wouldn't live up to all those pieces of wisdom I get the feeling she would understand.

I thought the excerpt on the inside of her book jacket said it well. "Through modern and atypically witty, Prudent Advice overflows with insight this is occasionally time-honored (There is no substitute for baking soda), sometimes tactical (Anytime you are debating whether to shower or not, take the shower), and other times incredibly profound (When something tragic happens to someone you care about, do not ignore them just because you don't know what to say).

Here are a few of my favorite excerpts from her book. I gave my little thoughts after each one.

80 Not everyone is going to like you, and that's just fine.
Me: Ain't that the truth. I struggle with this one at times.

176 A Wrap Dress is Universally flattering
Me: No Kidding.

348 Pack a bathing suit. You never know when the opportunity to swim might present itself.
Me: I've kept one in my trunk ever since I first owned a car. And every time I've used it, it's felt soooo good.

438 Be the second person to leave the party, never the first.
Me: This is one rule I follow well.

98 If you haven't worn it in a year, give it away. Exceptions to this rule include jewelry and wedding dresses.
Me: I've done this recently. It's changed my life! And my closet space.

51 If you flip other drivers off on the road, you will usually feel stupid afterward.
Me: As a teenager I learned this one the hard way.

244 If you don't have money to buy an extravagant gift for someone special, bake!
Me: I've practiced this too. Only replace 'bake' with 'sew'.

280 The first stall is always the cleanest. I've heard that people half-consciously assume that the first stall in a public restroom is dirty and consequently skip it, so it actually remains more sanitary.
Me: GOOD TO KNOW!

242  Your future together is not a great subject to discuss on a first date.
Me: Hah! I've never done this but it made me laugh.

Thanks Jaime for writing down all those pieces of wisdom. I think I will definitely give this to my daughter to look over when she becomes a teenager.

Andrews McMeel Publishing is offering one of these lovely books to one lucky Grosgrain reader. Share these simple wisdoms with your children too.

Sundries and Plunder Mask Guest Giveaway

October 15, 2010

I ♥ masquerade masks. They look so classy and old world. I soooo wish I had a masquerade ball to go to this Halloween. If I were running a restaurant I'd have a masquerade ball open to the public on Halloween and charge a specific admission fee. AND I'd wear one of these to the event!

Sundries and Plunder make the most GORGEOUS handmade masks. All cut, tooled and sculpted from a single piece of leather! Then hand painted front and back and sealed for added protection. Metallic paints are added for added shine and depth. Each mask is made to order, and because of the handmade nature, each is unique.

Like I said. AMAZING!
Sundries and Plunder is offering one very lucky Grosgrain reader one of their masks from their current selection. WINNER WILL BE CHOSEN THIS SUNDAY! So that you can get it before Halloween.

My favorite is their Raven leather mask (below).
